Thing to do in Calais 0

Calais is a town most famous for being the place where most cross channel ferries dock. Some visitors to Calais merely speed through it in their cars from the ferry to their holiday destination. But Calais is a beautiful city with enough attractions to keep a tourist entertained for much more than just a fleeting moment. It’s the perfect place for a day trip or short break.

Being just 26 miles away from the port of Dover, Calais is the ideal destination for a shopping trip with a difference. Calais is filled with food and wine shops, hypermarkets and shopping centres, and you can purchase many goods for up to 20% less than they cost in the UK. Calais’ most popular shopping street, Rue Royale, which has been recently modernised, is where you will find the most exclusive boutiques, cafes and bars.

Although it doesn’t have famous landmarks to rival Paris, Calais has plenty of beautiful sights to take in during your visit. The Flemish-style town hall is Calais’ most imposing landmark and Rodin’s life size bronze sculpture in front of it make it a sight to behold. Calais also has a tranquil, sandy beach that’s perfect for sunbathing, paddling on enjoying some French al fresco dining.

Calais is an incredibly vibrant yet traditional French town that’s more than deserving of your time. Next time you get the ferry from Dover to Calais, don’t rush away from the town too soon. You could be surprised by what you discover.
